EVENT // Craig Smith (6th Borough Project)

Queen & Disco | Friday 20th December | The Gweedore Bar

Last but by no means least in our winter parties have Craig Smith playing for us upstairs in the Gweedore. A few years back we booked Craig to play with us in Newcastle under Twisted Logic and it was the best decision we made. He played an absolute blinder of a set, and it was an eye-opener for us all so understandably we've got him in to play at our Christmas Special.

Craig has been busy as ever since then, working on several solo projects and also teaming with Graeme Clarke (The Revenge) and Peter Oakden under 6th Borough Project and Fifty Fathoms Deep respectively. 6th Borough are set to release a new album next year, so hopefully we'll get an early taster of some of their new releases.

Entry will be a £5 all night.

Double Hill & Jerome C - I Need Love

Secret Squirrels #1 - Track A

Great remix of Cultural Vibe's Ma Foom Bey. Recommended to us by the Get Down Edits pairing. Cheers Fella's

3.12.13

Achterbahn D'Amour - JX3

Simply put, this is a ridiculously good track.. Move D recently played at Corsica Studios, and literally was the hands down track of the evening.

30.11.13

Podcast 003 - LTJ Xperience

The third part of our live podcast series comes from @LTJ-Xperience. We were lucky enough to catch him twice over the weekend and he did'nt disappoint either time. In this mix Luca demonstrates his ability to roll through the genres seemlessly, keeping a flow to his tracks, mixing acid, house, downtempo, re-edits and the like.

The first part of this mix comes from one of the Queen & Disco residents, Barry 'Bee' Mc Cormick. Bee as you'll hear simply delves into his record crate of slowed down chuggers, whilst building a nice bit of momentum before LTJ.. Hope you enjoy :)

Q&D

27.11.13

The Stepkids - Sweet Salvation

If Super Furry Animals, Soul Clap and an Alien made a tune this would be it. Cracking laid back beats from The Stepkids.

9.11.13

LTJ Xperience - You Know

The tune that grabbed our attention from the off and hands down our favourite LTJ tune from his vast collection. A re-work of small world disco, this SLOW mutherfucka is just an absolute treat from day one... GOOD

24.10.13

EVENT // LTJ Xperience

For our second billing we've got the massively influential and highly regarded LTJ-Xperience flying in all the way from Bologna, Italia. Luca LTJ Trevisi (LTJ Xperience) first caught our attention on Soundcloud with his very unique blend of all things funk.

He was one of the producers who has benefited greatly from Soundcloud, gathering an impressive fan-base solely because of his stellar productions, unique re-edits and exquisite mixes. We're literally over-the-moon to be getting him to Derry, expect the unexpected!

Catch LTJ Xperience with us 29th November @ The Gweedore.

Craig Smith & The Revenge // The Soul Part II

As Ray Wilkins would say, My word. A serious tune here from the two men collectively known as 6th Borough Project. You can catch Craig Smith with us in Derry on the 20th December for our "Christmas Special" sure to be a belter...

7.10.13

Late Nite Tuff Guy - Think of U

As LNTG said himself, there've been countless re-edits and reworks of this classic. However, to stand out of the crowd these days whatever the edit, you have to bring something a little bit different to the table. A good edit should improve the track without taking away from the beauty of the original itself. An absolute hallmark of LNTG's work is his ability to pick a track and smother his style all over it. This Chic remake is no different, he's taken a good song and made it club friendly, check out the video yourself to see how it went down when he played it for us. Absolutely blew the roof off when it dropped. BANGER all round.

16.9.13

Francis Inferno Orchestra ¦ Take No Time

Massive track here from Francis Inferno Orchestra. A straight up unforgiving big room stomper.

And another one for good measure, this time a remix of Jacques Renault not as hard hitting but equally as effective in the club. Two bangers.

8.9.13

EVENT ¦ Autumn / Winter Series

Having started off with a bang with our first two summer parties our main objective remains the same, keep the music policy tight and over the next few months we intend to do so. We enjoyed some fine music and had brilliant craic with Horse Meat Disco, Late Nite Tuff Guy and the Get Down Edit's boys so there's no better way to keep the ball rolling by inviting Belfast-based Isodisco a trip over the Glenshane for a spin behind the Q&D wheels.

Isodisco Facebook Event

We've been massive fans of the Isodisco way for years now and have caught him play once or twice at Celtronic here in Derry. However, we felt he hasn't been given the recognition nor the chance he deserves in a prime-time spot to flex his musical muscles, as is normal for disco orientated DJ's.

Catch Isodisco 4th October @ The Gweedore.

He played an absolute blinder of a set, and it was an eye-opener for us all, so understandably, we've got him in to play at our "Christmas Special".  Craig has been busy as ever since then, working on several projects under different pseudonyms, namely Fifty Fathoms Deep and 6th Borough Project, which saw him team up with Peter Oakden and Graeme Clarke (The Revenge) respectively. 6th Borough are set to release a new album next year, so hopefully we'll have heard a few tracks come December.

Craig will be playing our Christmas Special 20th December @ The Gweedore.

Q&D

7.9.13

Huey Lewis & The News ¦ Hip to Be Square

I think they really came into their own with this. Commercially and artistically.

26.8.13

Event ¦ Queen & Disco with La Musique

La Musique and Queen & Disco | 30th August | Sandinos Back-Bar

Residents Party

When LaMusique head honcho and overall dance affectionado, Dollface Devereaux, a Mainstay on the Derry circuit for the past 6 years, came knocking on the door asking if we wanted to throw a joint party we jumped at the chance.

Dollface has been building his diverse music library for years now and is sure to always have the right track for the right moment. He will be bringing his usual sound, which is always sure to provide the perfect soundtrack to great night out.

Tom Hinds and Alan Mooney will be providing the sounds from the Q&D end of things. It will be the first time the pairing will have played together and both are equally excited to impress with a locker full of re-edited gems, old school bangers and as-of-yet, unearthed goodies. Alan has been busy putting together some of his very own re-edits, some of which may even be on offer this coming Friday!

On the night we'll be taking it to the 'back-bar' of Sandinos. A venue with a great atmosphere, perfect soundsystem and all round relaxed vibe.

The music will be a blend of disco, funk and electro as these 2 nights come together for a one night extravaganza.

Doors are £3 all night so there's no excuses not to get yourself down. Cheap night, great music and an intimate setting should help make it a great one. See you on Friday!

23.8.13

CKSNL - Orlando (OOFT! Vocal Remix) FREE DL

Bit of a wobbly deep house banger here from OOFT! One of our favorite producers, and he's giving this one away for free.

22.8.13

Fort Romeau - Jetée // Stay True // SW9

Mike Greene, aka Fort Romeau caught our attention a few years back and is starting to really cement his reputation as one of the UK's brightest producers. With these 3 releases on the ever-pleasing Ghostly, 2014 will see his debut album for released under them — it's his second full-length record, with his debut album Kingdoms being released last year on LA outsider dance institution 100% Silk.

EVENT ¦ Summer Sunset Soirée

Queen & Disco | 7th September | The Grand Central

Residents Party

We're getting ready for our autumn/winter parties and to see off the summer we're putting on a free residents party in The Grand Central.

The venue offers a perfect setting for our residents to show off their sounds, we're bringing this old beauty of a pub back to life. 90 years old this year, listed bar, listed building. Gorgeous original features, cosy, atmospheric little city centre gem!

Having thrown our first two events, we've been busy securing our upcoming acts for the months ahead but wanted to keep the ball rolling with this end of summer soiree.

The admission will be free all night, however capacity will be limited so get yourselves down early.

21.8.13

Souldiction // Studio55

Been a wee while since the last post, so it's only fair to post up a whole heap of bangers to get you through the week.

First comes from our man, Late Nite Tuff Guy. He released this a month or so ago and we can't stop listening to it

Been hearing this Sister Sledge tune for ages now but this particular edit always seemed to slip through the net whenever it came to finding it, so delighted to have finally done so. This recently featured in a mix from the heads in charge of Studio 55, a new night in Newcastle which promises to be a whole heap of fun going by the mix and their facebook goings-on. One to keep an eye on if you're in the North East for sure.

Next is a crowd from Berlin, Souldiction, who fire out some half decent "Hip Hop/ Electronica/ Soul" mixes from time to time, but a lot of the times they can be brown gear. This is one of their better ones, nice and chilled.

7.8.13

Queen & Disco ¦ Podcast 002 - Pt's 1&2

For the second installment of our podcast series we have a double header of live sets taken from our recent night with Get Down Edits and Late Nite Tuff Guy. The two were kind enough to allow us to record live from The Gweedore and they didn't disappoint in the slightest.

PART 1 - Get Down Edits

The first part of the podcast comes from the same fella's who brought us our first ever podcast series, Get Down Edits. On warm up duties for the night the lads, as expected, delivered the goods.  We all agreed that the lads could have well headlined the event and we'll have 'em back up north soon enough no doubt.

PART 2 - Late Nite Tuff Guy

The 2nd part of the poddy comes from none other than Late Nite Tuff Guy. We were beaming from ear to ear when we first heard this recording back. As you'd expect from a man who's knowledge and experience is so vast, the set was perfectly crafted over the 90 odd minutes and rose to a bouncing crescendo which had everyone forgetting their dignity.

Make some time for this and give it a listen....

For PHOTO'S and more info on the night, check out our Facebook.

Q&D

6.8.13

Kasper Bjorke ¦ Heaven (Prins Thomas Diskomiks)

An old one here from another one of our favourite producers, Prins Thomas. The Norwegian has that same knack for choosing great songs and adding to them his own unique touch as Todd Terje and this remake of Heaven shows exactly that.

5.8.13

Fat Larry's Band ¦ Act Just Like (Alan's Disco Re-Edit)

The Free DL this week comes in the form of Q&D's latest resident and all round maverick, Alan Mooney. Alan's been producing for over 2 years now but has finally found his feet as far as the direction of his musical production is headed. His re-edit of Fat Larry's Band shows the talent he has and also the eye for re-editing the right records without taking away from them, a key ingredient these days to having a successful re-editing career.

Catch Alan playing at one of the upcoming Q&D events, or in Dublin where he'll be playing at the Twisted Pepper alongside a few other head-the-balls from Derry.

3rd August 2013 - Michael Mcadams & Lloyd Grogan [Szoda Dublin/Culprit/Twin], Just Paul [White Widow/Funkoloko/Reverb], Alan Mooney [The Queen & Disco], Smak [Stripped Records], Philip Macleod [Demotiv] @ Ware Derry, Garden Party, Moran's Bar, Derry

28th September 2013 - Raffa FL [Nurvous/Akbal], Alan Mooney {The Queen & Disco] @ Reverb, Masons Venue, Derry

Mark E - Resident Advisor Podcast #112

The post today comes from way back in 2008 in the form of Mark E's Resident Advisor Podcast. This is one of those podcast's that you just seem to always go back to and it constantly sounds fresh, and still one of our favourites today..

26.7.13

Feature ¦ Chaz Jankel - The Forgotten Man of Pop

Although not totally oblivious to Chaz Jankel until recently, I must admit that after having done some research and reading on him I've found out some very interesting facts about the man behind a whole heap of 80's classics.

Having read through the earlier piece on Ian Dury again, I just happened to delve into the Blockheads side of the Dury story a little, to see what influences they brought to the table...

15.7.13

Event ¦ LATE NITE TUFF GUY & GET DOWN EDITS

To say we're excited about the arrival of this act is a huge understatement. As soon as we heard Late Nite Tuff Guy was touring Europe we jumped at the opportunity to book him.

Originally hailing from Adelaide, Austrailia, LNTG has gained popularity and our adoration over the years for his superb re-edits and re-works of classics from soul, rock, motown. However, arguably his biggest hit to date was the remix of DJ Le Roi & Roland Clark classic - "I Get Deep". It was a massive crossover and featured on many DJ’s playlists and charts before being picked up by Get Physical in early 2012 and is still rocking clubs and dance floors around the globe.

Greg Wilson is one of LNTG's biggest admirers, constantly praising the Aussie for his ever-dependable re-edits which he uses in his sets on a regular basis. His back-catalouge of re-edits, originals and mixes is impressive to say the least, type in LNTG to youtube and you'll see what we mean.

On warm-up duties for the night are Waterford's very own Get Down Edits. We've been keeping tabs on the duo for some time now, and their re-edits have seen high praise from many reputable artists on the scene like Bill Brewster, Greg Wilson and Harvey. GDE have already played with LNTG in Galway earlier this summer, and reports say that this is a combination not to be scoffed at. Have a listen to the first in our podcast series that GDE were kind enough to do back in June.

You can catch them both playing on Friday 2nd August, at The Gweedore.

The Coasters // Down In Mexico

Not a disco record by any means, but a banger nevertheless...

Queen & Disco Presents | Horse Meat Disco @ The Nerve Centre

With the dance scene undergoing a facelift in recent times (even though disco/funk/soul/italo/house orientated DJs have always been around) we, at Q&D, thought it was the perfect time to bring Derry into alignment with what is going on elsewhere on the dance floors across the world.

Only recently Derry played host to the much heralded, and Q&D favourite, Greg Wilson (check out our article on Greg here).  Wilson, who played at the Music City event in Ebrington Square, seemed to awaken the crowd to a form of dance music, not often heard in Derry before, dance music which owes itself to dancing!  This is achieved through lower BPM tracks, old-school classics, and modern day re-works, not to mention a deep archive of often long forgotten tracks, which all audiences can enjoy and recognise.

This trend is set to continue with the arrival of 'Nile Rodgers Presents- The Chic Organisation' on Sunday 28th July, which is set to be one of the biggest music events of the City of Culture.

Riding on the crest of this wave, The Queen and Disco have been striving to further push this re-invigorated genre onto the masses with a stellar summer line-up of our own, including Horse Meat Disco, Late Nite Tuff Guy, and Get Down Edits.

Our inaugural party is this Saturday, 13th July at The Nerve Centre where Horse Meat Disco, supported by Lowendisko and Q&D residents, will lay down the soundtrack to a night full of grooves and moves.

The residents of Derry are no strangers to the Horse Meat Disco Experience, with the disco troupe performing several times in the Maiden City since their inception almost 10 years ago.

They have become world renowned for their residencies in London, Berlin, Paris and New York and are repeat offenders on turntables across the globe with demand never waning for danceable grooves and the unique party atmosphere they bring.

This is a fresh concept for the Derry dance scene, pushing an all inclusive atmosphere and good vibes, accompanied by the perfect soundtrack to unforgettable parties.

This is not to be missed.

9.7.13

Bumblebee Unlimited | Lady Bug

A lot to take in with this little number, goes in a lot of different directions but never stops giving.

8.7.13

The The | Giant

Oldie from The The, got an undeniable deep groove accompanied by a heavy dose of synths and keys.

4.7.13

Dublin Aunts | Heartbreak Reputation (Drop Out Orchestra Mix)

Goodies all round with this one.

26.6.13

Motor City Drum Ensemble | Boiler Room London

If you haven't already had a listen to this tasty little mix from MCDE then plug in the speakers and get stuck into it. Full of disco gems, a real feelgood set from the man we all know and love for his deeper house tracks. MCDE recently done a Behind the Beats for Resident Advisor, explaining why he took time out to think about his career and how he manages suffering from anxiety attacks. In the feature, you can see how much music means to him and he shows he has another side to his musical tastes here. One of our favourite DJ's and has been for some time ..

24.6.13

Two Door Cinema Club - Sun (LNTG Rework)

Another Late Nite Tuff Guy goodie ahead of his gig with us on 2nd August in The Basement, Derry.

23.6.13

Los Amigos Invisibles & Dimitri From Paris ¦ Glad To Know You

Dimitri from Paris has been on our radar for a while now with some mouth watering sets and reworks.  Here's just a little slice....

21.6.13

Gil Scott-Heron ¦ The Bottle

One of my all time favourite tracks and a truly timeless musician with an endless back-catalogue and great tunes.  Well worth a dig if you haven't already.  Not quite disco, but guaranteed to be well received anywhere.

Marvin Gaye Heavy ¦ Love Affair (The Revenge ReWork)

Ahead of our gig today at RoCo Hair we've been busy digging for gold.

20.6.13

Fonda Rae ¦ Tuch Me

Absolutely love this track, effortless vocals from Fonda Rae and a great production, early night dance-floor filler for sure.

19.6.13

David Joseph ¦ You Can't Hide (Your Love From Me)

Having 2 first names is a pre-requiste for having talent, or so I've heard.  David Joseph goes a way to proving it with this one from 1983.

Eruption ¦ I Can't Stand The Rain

All the way back to 1978 for this one.  A one hit wonder's better than a no hit wonder...

13.6.13

Podcast 001 Get Down Edits

Prior to announcing our first series of events, we worked hard to ensure we got in the right acts.  The boys at Get Down Edits certainly fit the bill.  They have worked tirelessly in their native Waterford to spread their infectious sound and are now starting to fully reap the rewards.  Their summer roster is mouth watering and sees them play at gigs across the country, and indeed Europe, as well as an appearance at the much heralded SeaSessions.

So it was a massive honour when they agreed to put together an exclusive mix for Queen & Disco and help us kick off our Q&D Volumes with a bang.

They will of course be playing at our 2nd of August gig alongside Late Nite Tuff Guy, which already is shaping up to be a disco extravaganza.

We will be making it available to everyone to download over the weekend so keep an eye.

Follow us on Facebook to keep up to date.

7.6.13

Disclosure ¦ Help Me Lose My Mind

Taken from latest album "Settle" Disclosure team up with London Grammar for Help me Lose My Mind. Showing their less dancey side, the boys show just how capable they are when producing with other artists. The end product is great and Disclosure have on multiple occasions shown how to collab with other artists and utilise their strengths alongside their own rough and ready style.

3.6.13

Diana Ross ¦ I Ain't Been Licked

Not much needs to be said about Diana Ross, this is a classic track of hers from Side A of "The Boss" that often gets overlooked and is criminally underplayed.

2.6.13

George Duke ¦ Shine on (Late Nite Tuff Guy Re-Edit)

Another one of our future guests LNTG is just the absolute man when it comes to re-edits these days. His back-catalogue of unbelievable tunes on youtube is hard to believe, check em out.

He plays with us, on the 2nd Aug so keep an eye out for more on that.

Michael Jackson ¦ Burn This Disco Out

1.6.13

31.5.13

Bicep ¦ Rise

There's a lot of posts of Bicep's tracks on here, but this is definitely our favourite. Fast paced, yet slow building "RISE" from the recent "The Stash" EP is the gift that keeps giving from around the 2:42 mark.

30.5.13

Teddy Pendergrass - You Can't Hide From Yourself (Dimitri From Paris Super Disco Blend)

This boogie cut from Dmitri From Paris is as infectious a tune you'll hear anywhere. The 8-odd minute number will have any floor on it's feet for sure.

29.5.13

Free Downloads ¦ The Golden Boy

Dominic Hammonds is a producer from Birmingham who, after making music from a young age, has finally started to break through with a series of 2013 releases that have caught the attention of those in the UK house and bass scenes.

After really focusing on The Golden Boy project over the last year, his sounds first made it onto a host of mixes and sets of DJs, until people started taking note of the man behind the music and his popularity burgeoned.

Now having secured an EP release with the Ministry of Sound, the boy has made his name onto listings throughout the UK for the summer as labels and club nights clamber to have him tied to their names. His new EP, Higher, epitomises the effort Hammonds has put into The Golden Boy, showcasing the biggest basslines and filthiest chords in a three track set that has already been causing a hype.

3 Free DL's available below

28.5.13

Tambi ¦ You Don't Know (HMD Remix)

In a follow-up post to the announcement to our first event, we have a tasty track (and also free give-away download) from Horse Meat Disco.

A mid-tempo chugger, constantly builds and has an epic drop at the mid way point.

Get the download here

22.5.13

Event ¦ HORSE MEAT DISCO

We've been looking to set the bar high for our first night, and we're delighted to announce that we'll be joined by the lads at Horse Meat Disco.

We like many others we have been kept dancing to the distinct sounds of HMD. Though years of crate digging, party starting and boat pulling their now legendary party in London basically runs itself and has an avid army of fans who'll swear by their ever-impressive ability to read a dance floor and react accordingly. Fueled by early soul, and funk records the lads are well known for mixing it up.

Now approaching their tenth year of existence, the four-man DJ outfit have continued to lead the way in the disco field with packed residencies at their aforementioned HQ in Eagle London, various venues in New York, Prince Charles in Berlin and Silencio/Wanderlust in Paris.

Having held off for a few weeks to confirm the warm-up DJ's, we've decided that the Lowendisko boys will provide the perfect soundtrack with their low-slung, mid-tempo, deep-house bangers. We're told that Bee will be playing a few gigs with future guests & friends of ours from down south, Get Down Edits, in the near future so it also made sense to get the lads on board as they know the direction we're taking musically, and could hopefully be a solid fixture at Q&D. They've been apart of the Derry scene for some time and we're delighted to get them in.

Jonny Boy will host the back bar along with the Q&D residents.

The event will take place on Saturday 13th July at The Nerve Centre, Derry.

20.5.13

Feature ¦ Ian Dury - The Last Champion of Pop Music

The music industry is nowadays such a prohibitive place for artists. Acts and bands are ‘chosen’ by the powers-that-be and there is often little choice from the public about who succeeds (commercially) and who flops...

8.5.13

Feature ¦ Sir Alex Ferguson

As an avid supporter of Manchester United and of course Sir Alex Ferguson, the question that every peer wants to know after just announcing his retirement at he end of this season - what was the key to his longevity and success?

Drop Out Orchestra

I've been keeping tabs on Drop Out Orchestra for a fair while now, and it seems as though their hard graft may be paying off after all these years of doing re-mixes and the like with no real recognition. They are currently subject to a lot of radio play on stations like BBC 6 music due to their recent re-edit of Daft Punk's Get Lucky. It's being heralded as the best edit about at the minute, and that's no mean feat. Without taking too much away from the track, they still manage to leave their own footprint with the addition of violins and synths at equally telling points within the track.

This is another one of my favourite tracks of theirs...

7.5.13

FEATURE ¦ Greg Wilson - The Scene Thorugh his Eyes, and Through Ours

""Disco wasn’t the name I would have personally chosen as the term for what I play now. I felt it came with too much baggage, given previous associations and prejudices, and besides, I was drawing from a much wider palette. However, now it has been named as such, I fully embrace the term in its original spirit – not as a specific genre, but, as I said in the sleevenotes, as music made to be played in clubs and discotheques, in all its splendid diversity, and spanning an entire history.""

Known initially for his DJ'ing in Merseside and Wigan Pier, Greg Wilson crafted out a reputation as being one of the fore-running UK DJ's playing electro sets with predominantly black origins. This was at the time gaining more popularity leading to Wilson being handed the Reigns at legendary Manchester club, The Haçienda,  and the wheels were firmly in place for Wilson to go on to big things.

6.5.13

Flight Facilities ¦ A Fifth of Beethoven (FF's Edit)

We've been liking Flight Facilities stuff of late, and this edit jumps into life at around the half-way point.

29.4.13

B-Beat Girls ¦ For the Same Man + Fingerman Edit

A 1983 disco release here from B-Beat Girls along with another cracking edit by Fingerman, buy at Discogs

27.4.13

Feature ¦ Kanye West - Sample Seniority or Blatant Ego Tickling

Since its inception, Hip-Hop and Rap and all of their subsequent sub-genres had been founded on the sampling of snippets of older songs, from a multitude of different genres, in order to create an unrecognisable whole; which was in many instances, greater than the sum of its parts...

26.4.13

24.4.13

Don Downing ¦ Doctor Boogie (Ramsey Hercules & Fingerman Edit)

I was almost sure this was posted before but it apparently hasn't been after a quick search. An absolute PEACH of a tune re-edited brilliantly by Fingermanedit.
