Feature ¦ When do we cross the line between a sample and robbery?

Call me naïve, but when I first heard the Duck Sauce song Barbara Streisand, I genuinely thought that the Djing duo of Armand Van Helden and A-Trak had managed to come up with a catchy summer melody that would go on to dominate dance floors across the world.

Despite the fact I found the song hugely irritating, and knew it would only grow to be more so with the countless hours of airtime that would follow, I did appreciate what ‘they had done’.

With this in mind it was to my disgust (Ok maybe that’s a tad harsh, but certainly to my displeasure) that I discovered the song heavily sampled the 1979 track Gotta Go Home by Boney M, who coincidently sampled Hallo Bimmelbahn’s 1973 hit Nighttrain.[1]

You may well ask what my gripe is with this.  It is well-known to many that samples are a widely used facet of the music industry and in fact many hits, particularly in the rap/hip-hop and dance genres, utilise samples.  My problem, however, does not lie here.

If you take 10 minutes out of your life and listen to the songs previously mentioned you can see what my problem is.  At least I hope you can. (Songs linked below)

Cobblestone Jazz ¦ India in Me

Another one of my all time favourite producers, and tunes for that matter.. Cobblestone Jazz's 'India in Me'

27.6.12

Anja Schneider & And.Id ¦ Imagination

This bouncy wee number from Anja Schneider & And.id is a bit more technoey but still a goodie

23.6.12

Hackman ¦ Forgotten Notes

The young UK producer Hackman reveals his latest release out now. A floating vocal intro with a slowed down 2-steppy vibe. Perfect for sun-setting rooftop parties. Such a Biggie.

17.6.12

Kelley Polar ¦ In Time

This banger is so underrated it's hard to believe, wispy vocals mixed with loopy chords. Winner

I found this effort on soundcloud extending the original without ruining what's good about it. Decent

Dimitri From Sofia ¦ Miami Vice Mixtape

Something ever so slightly different now, a sleazed out, greased up piece of 80's summer magic. A Miami Vice themed mix with some big hitters, think slicked back hair, copious amounts of cocaine and bitches with illuminous pink bikinis on...

The Glue - Love Generator (DRMC Remix)

Cole Medina ¦ Cole Loves Your Inside's Out

Been meaning to post about Cole Medina for a while now and this track in particular. One of the best Bee-Gees Re-Edits you'll hear and quite possibly my favorite edit of all time along with Nicholas' work on Sade's Paradise. I think I first heard this in Mark E's Resident Advisor mix quite some years ago now and been in love ever since.

13.6.12

Tom Tom Club ¦ Genius Of Love (Original Club Mix)

An early 80's classic used in countless amounts of mixes, the song is one of the most sampled rhythm tracks of all time, particularly within the rap/R&B/hip-hop genre, with dozens of unsolicited remixes and versions, by artists such as Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five, Public Enemy, Redman, Cam'Ron, 2Pac, Busta Rhymes, 50 Cent, Dream Warriors, and T.I.

Forming in 1981 by husband and wife team Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz, both also known for being bandmembers of the group Talking Heads. Named after the dancehall in the Bahamas where they rehearsed for the first time while on hiatus from Talking Heads in 1980, Tom Tom Club enjoyed early success in the dance club culture of the early 1980s.

Dutch producer Disco Syndicate's edit of American funk/soul legend Marvin Gaye's 1971 hit song, 'Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)', which was originally released by Motown Records. The edit was released as a free sample on Disco Syndicate's SoundCloud page and it's a wee bit good !

Groove Armada ¦ There was a Rhythm

Groove Armada There was a rhythm

Taken from the forthcoming 'NO KNOCK EP,' 'There Was Rhythm' is a great release from the Groove Armada boys. Slightly Todd Terjey / Lil Louisey, but I guess there's nothing wrong with that.

Anthony Naples ¦ Mad Disrespect EP

Rolling Stones - Miss You (The Special Disco Version 12")

mick jagger silhouette photo

This 12" 'disco version of the song was the Stones' first dance remix. Jagger and Ronnie Wood insist that "Miss You" wasn't conceived as a disco song, while Richards said, "...'Miss You' was a damn good disco record; it was calculated to be one." In any case, what was going on in discotheques did make it to the recording. Charlie Watts (drummer) said, "A lot of those songs like 'Miss You' on 'Some Girls'... were heavily influenced by going to the discos. You can hear it in a lot of those four-to-the-floor and the Philadelphia-style drumming."

3.6.12

Paul Weller ¦ When Your Gardens Overgrown (The Deadstock 303 Dub)

One of the most original tracks I've heard in a long time, an unusual combination to go for Paul Weller and hard hitting synths. However, Justin Robertson aka The Deadstock usually gets these things right. Sounds a treat

1.6.12

Midland - Placement EP

To kick things off for June, we've got the new Midland 'Placement' EP. Stripped-down house at it's best, Placement is a slow but steady building record with an edgy sound. Midland seems to stamp his own touch of class into everything he touches these days, and this is no different.

10 Disco Re-Edits / Remixes on Soundcloud

A few of the top tracks found on soundcloud at the minute

Groove Armada: Late Night Tales Vol II

If you like GA and '80s electronica, you probably already know most of the tracks on this CD compilation (Depeche Mode, The Human League, Roxy Music, Electronic and The Cure) but it's some of the remixes, particularly of Elle Et Moi by Max Berlin and the superb Beyond The Wizards Sleeve remix of Midlake's Roscoe that really stick out. There's new as well as old, too. Old such as Marvin Gaye and Tami Tyrell, Stevie Wonder, and new; Peter, Bjorn and John or Midlake. However the biggest surprise of the album is the very credible Will Young track, Friday's Child.

Los Suruba ¦ Mantis feat. Louisahhh! (Original mix)

What does Suruba mean? In Portuguese, especially in Brazil, Suruba is the word for an orgy. A wild party, a sinful bacchanal. The introductory line of their bio, these two have been getting support from fellow compatriot Edu Imbernon as well as Okain, Noir and the like. Such a tight tune here, constantly building and teasing, sure to be a hit this summer. Goodie
